DAP Market Market Overview

The global diammonium phosphate (DAP) market in July 2025 is experiencing a new wave of price escalation and supply tension, driven primarily by India’s strong seasonal demand, tighter Chinese exports, and higher input costs such as phosphoric acid. This shift in fundamentals is reshaping trade patterns and reinforcing the role of key exporters like Morocco and Russia, while creating opportunities for others such as Egypt and China.

India Leads Global DAP Demand

India remains at the center of global DAP consumption, driven by the monsoon-linked agricultural season. In June alone, India imported 423,000 tonnes of DAP, below its seasonal average, while domestic production stood at 341,000 tonnes, also under the five-year norm. As of late June, the country held about 1.56 million tonnes in stock, nearly 50% below typical June levels. In response, the Indian government raised the DAP subsidy to Rs31,299 per tonne to maintain affordability and offset losses for producers and importers.

The country’s sourcing pattern remains diversified, with imports from Saudi Arabia (805kt), Morocco (464kt), Russia (285kt), Jordan (196kt), and Australia (190kt) from April to July. Major Indian importers include IPL, CIL, Chambal Fertilisers, NFL, and RCF. Notably, a 30,000-tonne Russian cargo was recently purchased at $795/t CFR, marking the current spot price benchmark.

Supplier Activity in the DAP Market: Morocco, Egypt, China

Morocco’s OCP continues to assert its position as a dominant global supplier. In recent weeks, it sold 12,000 tonnes of DAP/MAP to Central and Eastern Europe at $795–805/t FOB and an additional 17,000 tonnes to Western Europe at $790–805/t FOB. Beyond Europe, Morocco also finalized a supply contract with Bangladesh for 480,000 tonnes of DAP for the 2025–2026 fiscal year.

Egypt’s NCIC has re-entered the export market with a 20,000-tonne DAP sale priced between $795 and $800/t FOB, while Ethiopia awarded tenders for 60,000 tonnes and 50,000 tonnes of Chinese-origin DAP at $721.42 and $731.48 per tonne FOB, respectively.

DAP Regional Price and Demand Highlights

Across Asia and beyond, DAP prices are firming. Chinese producers are restricting export volumes, which has helped support global benchmarks. Southeast Asian markets remain active: Thailand is importing Chinese DAP at $770–775/t CFR, Vietnam has offers at $765–780/t CFR, and Malaysia is purchasing bagged containerized DAP at $775–800/t CFR. In South Korea, 6,000 tonnes of Chinese DAP were recently purchased at around $770/t CFR, and Japan has received offers for 2,000–3,000 tonnes at $800/t CFR.

 Other DAP Market Highlights

Meanwhile, Pakistan is facing firming import prices of $750–770/t CFR, with domestic bagged DAP priced at Rp12,625 per 50kg, pressured by rising phosphoric acid costs. In Latin America, Colombia’s ex-warehouse DAP prices have risen to $890–900/t, while Mexico has reportedly sold out of port stocks. In Africa, BADC in Bangladesh finalized a major purchase from Morocco (480,000 tonnes), and Nepal’s KSCL recently closed a tender for 25,000 tonnes.

📈 DAP Market Outlook

With global phosphoric acid prices remaining firm and China maintaining tight export controls, the DAP market is expected to remain strong through Q3 2025. For buyers in Asia and Africa, securing forward supply at competitive pricing is now a strategic priority, while suppliers like Morocco, Russia, and Egypt are poised to strengthen their market share.

What is Phosphate Rock?

Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral that contains a significant concentration of phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅), which is essential for producing various phosphate fertilizers and chemical products. It is primarily extracted from sedimentary deposits and comes in different grades—such as 26%, 28%, 30%, and even higher—depending on the source.

From a geochemical standpoint, phosphate rock typically consists of apatite compounds, often found alongside other elements like calcium, magnesium, iron, and occasionally rare earth elements. The quality and purity of the rock directly influence the efficiency of both chemical processing and agricultural use, making the selection of a reliable source critically important.

What are the Applications of Phosphate Rock?

Phosphate rock has a wide range of applications across various industries, including:

  1. Fertilizer Production
More than 80% of the phosphate rock mined globally is used to produce fertilizers such as DAP (Diammonium Phosphate), MAP (Monoammonium Phosphate), and TSP (Triple Superphosphate), which play a crucial role in improving soil fertility and boosting crop yields.

  2. Phosphoric Acid Production
Phosphate rock serves as the primary raw material for producing both industrial- and food-grade phosphoric acid, an essential base material used in numerous chemical and pharmaceutical products.

  3. Industrial and Food-Related Uses
In sectors such as detergents, animal and poultry feed, specialty metals, and ceramic chemicals, derivatives of phosphate rock offer both functional and economic value.
